Japan Rail Pass: Everything you need to know for your trip to Japan by train

Choose the best Japan Rail Pass for your itinerary

Tokyo <> Kyoto

Between 7 and 10 days

A return ticket from Tokyo station to Kyoto station by Shinkansen costs the same as a 7-day Japan Rail Pass. If you plan on making any day trips along the way (such as Kamakura, Nara, or within the Greater Tokyo Area), it is more cost-effective to cover them with a JR Pass! The Japan Rail Pass is also valid on the JR lines that connects the airport in Tokyo.

Tokyo <> surrounding cities

Between 7 and 10 days

Imagine you are staying in Japan for no longer than 10 days, and that in addition to Tokyo, you would like to visit the highlights in surrounding areas, such as Mount Fuji, Nikko and Nagano. In this situation, you can definitely maximize the value of a 7-day Japan Rail Pass. This will allow you to avoid purchasing single tickets each time you take the train.

Tokyo <> Kanazawa <> Kyoto <> Tokyo

Between 10 and 14 days

Visit Tokyo for a few days, then use your Japan Rail Pass to explore Kanazawa and Kyoto, before returning to Tokyo. Tokyo station and Kyoto station are connected by the Tokaido Shinkansen line, included with the Japan Rail Pass. JR Pass holders can reserve their seats at the counter office. In addition, you can purchase a Suica card, which is a prepaid e-money card for commuting and shopping.

Tokyo <> Kanazawa <> Kyoto <> Hiroshima

Between 14 and 21 days

Ideal for first-time travelers. After spending a few days in Tokyo, a 14-day Japan Rail Pass would allow you to visit the main landmarks of Kyoto, Kanazawa, Osaka and Hiroshima. Don’t miss out on Miyajima which is located a few miles away from Hiroshima- the JR Miyajima Ferry is also covered by your Pass!

Japan from North to South

Between 18 days or more

For keen travelers, this itinerary covers most of the major sites: starting from the natural island of Hokkaido, head down to Mount Fuji and the Japanese Alps, then ancient Kyoto, the islands of Naoshima and Miyajima, and the steaming hot onsens of Kyushu Island! You don't have to purchase a train ticket each time you take the train. Simply use your Japan Rail Pass to access the JR network.
