Iriomote Island, the Galapagos of the East
Mangrove forests and waterfalls in the middle of the jungle come to mind when you talk about Iriomote Island. Iriomote is the second largest island of the Okinawan archipelago, and certainly the most wild, with 90% of its surface covered by jungle or mangrove forests. It is also Japan's southernmost national park. One generally goes there to paddle through the mangroves, trek or canyoneer in its jungle rivers, and hope to meet specimens of the many endemic species, especially the famous Iriomote Yamaneko, or Iriomote wildcat.
In fact, the island was chosen in 2021 to be part of the Unesco World Natural Heritage because of its unique flora and fauna, which has evolved in isolation due to the island's isolated geographical position. Hence its nickname "the Galapagos of the East".
Discovering the best snorkelling spots in the Yaeyama Archipelago
Okinawa is one of the best snorkelling spots, not only in Japan, but in Asia. And the Yaeyama Archipelago, which includes Iriomote Island, is famous for its turquoise waters filled with amazing aquatic creatures. With this day of snorkelling, you can easily explore the corals around Iriomote without having to be licensed and without heavy diving equipment.
Meet at 8am at Hirata Tourism for check in and embark on a 45 minute cruise to Iriomote Island at Ishigaki Port. Disembark at Uehara Port where you will meet your guide.
You will then leave for Barasu Island, which is made entirely of coral reefs and is surrounded by rich marine life of tropical fish, sea urchins and perhaps sea turtles for the lucky ones. The second stop will be Hatoma Island, another fantastic place for snorkelling. After enjoying the sea, you will have the opportunity to have a barbecue prepared for you. In the afternoon, your guide will take you to another snorkelling spot, chosen according to the weather and sea conditions of the day.
