You are authorized to live permanently in a foreign country.
(Depending on the country, your permanent residency card may or may not be accepted.)
1) Your card of residency is accepted (countries listed in yellow on the chart)
Please provide the following two documents as a proof for your eligibility:
- proof of status as a permanent resident in a foreign country (residence card or similar...)
- proof of residence outside Japan (documents issued by an official institution with the name and address of the concerned person e.g. utility bills, tax documents, school enrolments, etc. We recommend that you take at least two different documents to be sure of acceptance).
2) Your card of residency is NOT accepted, but you can obtain a certificate of eligibility (countries listed in gray on the chart)
In this case, please apply for a “certificate of eligibility” issued by the Embassy of Japan. If you need further information about how to apply for a “certificate of eligibility”, please contact the Embassy of Japan in your country of residence.
Please note: If a country does not appear on the list, then a person is not eligible to purchase a Japan Rail Pass, even though a person may have had the “certificate of eligibility” before.List of eligible countries>> Explanation in Japanese is here
