Travel by train in Japan

A step-by-step guide for how to easily exchange your voucher for a JR Pass.

1. Locate the nearest exchange office

JR Pass Exchange Offices are located in most major train stations and airports (but not all, for example not in Chubu Airport in Nagoya).

Plan out ahead of time where and when you’ll exchange your pass using this official list of offices.

It’s important to note: Regional passes can only be exchanged at certain exchange offices within the region. Please check beforehand.

3. Get your rail pass and go!

Your rail pass is a green JR rail ticket pasted into a special folder, as pictured here. This is what you’ll need to show at the ticket gate to pass through to the trains, or at ticket offices to make seat reservations.

Some exchange offices allow to do the first reservations of your trip.
