Free wifi on Shinkansen with a Japan Rail Pass

Tohoku, Hokuriku, Akita, Yamagata, Joetsu shinkansen

JR East launched free wifi in 2018 on its Tohoku Shinkansen (Tokyo-Sendai-Morioka), Hokuriku Shinkansen (Tokyo-Nagano-Kanazawa) and Akita Shinkansen. 

In 2020, all Yamagata Shinkansen Line and all Joetsu Shinkansen Line (Tokyo - Niigata) were equipped with wifi.

Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Hokkaido shinkansen

On Tokaido Lines and Sanyo Lines (Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Fukuoka), Central Japan Railway and West Japan Railway has introduced free wifi last year. Wifi is also available in main stations

The wifi service is also available on Kyushu shinkansen and Hokkaido shinkansen

There are also plans to introduce free wifi in Limited Express as recently in the new Limited express to Hakone.
