The Nagano-Niigata Region

Both coastal and mountainous cities, Nagano and Niigata are a taste of the countryside not too far from Tokyo. On the way to Nagano, explore Karuizawa, a luxurious hotspring resort. Further on, Nagano: made famous by the 1998 Winter Olympics, today it is a top spot for Buddhist pilgrimages and walks in the beautiful Japanese Alps.

Niigata, is an area well-known throughout the country for its local produce such as rice. A modern city, it is also one of the most important fishing ports. This city is also the gateway to Sado Island, a special island where nature and hiking reign supreme.
